The Romans were not ones to mess around. If they had decided to found a city and it needed water, they would build an aqueduct . This is what happened in Nîmes as its population grew and the Fontaine spring proved incapable of supplying water to everyone. No sooner said than done: the Nîmes aqueduct was built to bring water to the city from Uzès. Almost 50 kilometres long with a good number of bridges – despite the fact that 90% of its layout is underground. The most famous one that has survived to this day is the Pont du Gard . The name could not be more descriptive: the river it crosses is none other than the Gard or Gardon.

We go back to the first century AD and we find one of the most spectacular public works of the Roman Empire that has survived to this day. Let's start with the first thing. It is on the Gard River, in a beautiful natural setting. But where exactly is the Pont du Gard? In the municipality of Vers-Pont-du-Gard , 27 km from Nimes and 21 from Avignon.

The nearest train stations are in Nimes and Avignon. There are buses from there. We are talking about lines 121 from Nimes and 115 from Avignon.
How to get there by car and how to park, is it free?
If you want to get to the Pont du Gard by car , it is best to ask Google Maps, which will be able to direct you to the official car parks . There is one on each side of the bridge with a capacity for 1,400 vehicles in total. However, parking is not free, you will have to pay €9 per car per day . When we went, we found cars parked on the shoulders of the D-981, but we don't think that was the best idea...
